In a strong action against obscene and inappropriate content, the Indian government has blocked 25 apps and websites, including popular platforms like ULLU, ALTT, Desiflix, and others.
According to a report by Storyboard18, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) issued a notice to internet service providers, asking them to block public access to these platforms across India.
These platforms were found to be showing objectionable ads and pornographic content, violating several Indian laws, including:
Section 67 and 67A of the IT Act, 2000 (related to obscene material),
Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (obscene acts and songs),
Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.

The government stated that under the IT Rules 2021, intermediaries (like websites and platforms) must not host or share content that:
Affects India’s sovereignty or public order,
Shows obscene or immoral material,
Incites violence or spreads defamation,
Disrespects court or promotes illegal acts.
Failing to follow these rules removes their protection from liability under the IT Act, making them legally responsible.
1,500+ Gambling Sites and Apps Also Banned
In addition to these platforms, the government has also blocked 1,524 illegal gambling and betting websites and apps between 2022 and June 2025.
Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, told the Lok Sabha that many of these gambling platforms are based offshore and do not follow Indian tax or legal rules.
Any online gaming platform operating in India must register under the IGST Act and pay 28% GST. Those who fail to do so risk getting banned.
“The government is committed to providing a safe, open, and accountable internet experience for users,” the minister added.
