For the first since a long time that the Chief Minister of Punjab was able to make it to the Raising Day Parade of the Chandigarh Police, according to several officials now working in the Chandigarh Police Department.
When Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit arrived at the location of the Chandigarh Police’s 56th Raising Day Parade together on Friday at the Recruitment Training Center in police lines, Sector 26, many people were shocked.
Many of the Chandigarh Police’s personnel said that the Punjab Chief Minister’s attendance at the Chandigarh Police’s Raising Day Parade was a first in many years. The police said that the chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana, along with other dignitaries, are routinely invited by the Chandigarh Police to participate in the annual Raising Day Parade.
According to my understanding, the Punjab CM’s attendance at the UT Police’s Raising Day Parade was a first. Many of us were unaware of CM Bhagwant Mann’s visit. We were shocked to see Mann approaching the platform with Governor-cum-UT Administrator Banwari Lal Purohit. The Governor will always be the principal guest at this event. Adviser (UT) Dharam Pal and DGP (UT) Praveer Ranjan greeted the two. Purohit and Mann saluted the procession jointly, according to a DSP rank officer who has worked with the Chandigarh Police for more than 30 years and asked to remain anonymous.
Mann brought up the matter of the stifled promotions of Chandigarh Police inspectors to the level of DSPs in March 2020 while he was an MP from Sangrur, alleging the Central government of disrespecting the 60:40 ratio of Punjab and Haryana during the then-current parliament session in New Delhi. He had questioned why the government wasn’t releasing DANIPS cadre DSPs from Chandigarh right away despite the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s instructions. Since 2014, DSPs from the DANIPS cadre has been sent to Chandigarh.
Mann watched the whole procession for twenty minutes. Before Purohit and DGP Praveer Ranjan’s speeches, which described the accomplishments and new efforts of the Chandigarh Police this year before the present audience, he fled the location.
DGP Ranjan said in his speech that “many new and innovative programs have also been launched in this order to develop a solid relationship with the general public and to form partnerships between police and the communities they serve. Police have also agreed to several Memorandums of Understanding, such as one with Gandhi Nagar’s National University of Forensic Sciences and NETGRID with NECTAR for online applications.
