Tension gripped Jahlan village in Patiala on Wednesday when police arrived to remove what they called illegal encroachments from a disputed piece of land.Farmer unions alleged that the government was trying to hand over the land to a “privileged few,” which led to protests in the area.
Police reportedly used mild force to disperse the protestors, with claims that even women and elderly people were not spared.According to farmer groups, more than 25 villagers — including several women activists — were taken into custody. The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) has condemned the police action, calling it unjustified and oppressive.
