India is moving closer to getting the terror group The Resistance Front (TRF) officially sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). In a major development, the UNSC’s Monitoring Committee has named TRF in its latest report — an important step before the matter goes to the Sanctions Committee.
The report mentions that TRF shared a photo of the Pahalgam terror attack site, an incident that sparked global concern. It also includes claims that the attack could not have taken place without the support of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
India had already briefed the committee in April and May, providing evidence of TRF’s growing activities and its close ties to LeT. Now, one UNSC member has officially confirmed TRF’s connection to LeT — a significant endorsement of India’s claims.
The report further warns that terrorist groups might take advantage of rising tensions in the region, highlighting the urgent need for strong counter-terror strategies.
Next, the case will go to the UNSC Sanctions Committee, where India hopes to push for formal action against TRF. If successful, it would be a major diplomatic and strategic win for India.
Why TRF’s Mention Is a Big Deal
TRF being named in the UN Security Council’s Monitoring Team (MT) Report is a major milestone. All reports by the 1267 Sanctions Committee are approved only when all member countries agree — so this reflects a global consensus.
This comes despite Pakistan’s recent efforts to downplay TRF’s role. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister had earlier claimed that his country successfully removed any mention of TRF from a UNSC statement on the Pahalgam attack.
However, TRF’s clear inclusion in the latest UN report directly contradicts Pakistan’s narrative and weakens its long-standing strategy of using terror groups under neutral-sounding names like The Resistance Front or People Against Fascist Front to mask the real involvement of groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed in Jammu and Kashmir.
Now, that tactic is being openly challenged by the global community.
