Jammu, July 31:
A 20-year-old engineering student has been arrested by Jammu and Kashmir Police for allegedly trying to run over an elderly man with his Thar SUV in a shocking case of road rage in Jammu’s upscale Gandhi Nagar area.
The accused, identified as Mannan Anand, son of Rajinder Anand, and resident of Nanak Nagar, was on the run since Sunday’s incident. Police confirmed his arrest on Wednesday in connection with FIR No. 163/2025 under sections 281, 125(a), and 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“Swift action, sharp pursuit. Absconding Thar driver in the road rage case that sparked public outrage has been arrested. Justice may take time, but it never loses its way,” the police said in a WhatsApp message.
The incident, caught on CCTV, shows the Thar SUV hitting 68-year-old businessman Kamal Dutt’s scooter from behind while trying to overtake. After the initial impact, the driver moves the vehicle forward, and as Dutt stands up, he reverses the SUV directly onto him. The shocking act has been widely condemned.
The video further shows the driver stepping out and standing over the unconscious man before getting back into the vehicle and fleeing the scene. Disturbingly, no bystanders offered help as Dutt lay on the road.
Later, his family members rushed him to a nearby hospital. On Wednesday, due to the worsening of his condition and severe head injuries, Dutt was shifted to Fortis Hospital in Punjab.
Multiple police teams had been deployed to track down the absconding driver after the footage went viral and sparked public outrage.
