Faridkot, Punjab — A prompt intervention by the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) stopped a child marriage in Sangrahoor village, rescuing a 16-year-old girl from being wed.

Punjab’s Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister, Baljit Kaur, praised the swift action of officials and other stakeholders, emphasising that strict enforcement of child protection laws is crucial to safeguarding the rights of minors.

The rescue operation was carried out under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. The girl was presented before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), where she received counselling and guidance. She was later handed over to her parents after they gave a written promise to ensure her safety, education, and well-being.

Authorities confirmed that regular follow-ups and monitoring will continue to protect the child’s best interests.

Minister Kaur reiterated the Punjab government’s commitment to making the state free from child marriage. She highlighted ongoing efforts to raise awareness, prevent such incidents, and strictly enforce the law so that every child can have a safe and bright future.

She also urged the public to help in this mission, asking anyone with information about a child marriage to immediately contact the Child Helpline at 1098, assuring that the identity of the informant will remain strictly confidential.
