Leader of Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa, strongly criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s land pooling policy, calling it a direct attack on farmers and a way to loot their land.
Speaking at a protest named “Saadi Zameen, Saadi Ma” outside the GMADA office in Mohali, Bajwa alleged that the government plans to take over 6.5 lakh acres of land across Punjab — with 6,000 acres targeted in Mohali alone. Yet, he pointed out, only 35 acres have received farmer consent so far, showing clear opposition to the policy.
Bajwa was joined by senior Congress leaders including former Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, and Vijay Sharma Tinku. He claimed that a committee made up of non-Punjabis, along with a non-Punjabi Chief Secretary, is being allowed to make decisions for Punjab’s farmers. He accused CM Bhagwant Mann of distancing himself from the process, noting that neither he nor Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has signed any such land documents.
Referring to GMADA’s Ecocity-2 Extension Scheme, Bajwa said land was acquired from farmers back in 2013 but plots have still not been given to them, questioning the government’s track record.
Sidhu claimed the current policy has frozen the sale and purchase of nearly 65,000 acres of land, causing distress to farmers, youth, and government employees. He added, “The government is crushing soldiers, farmers, youngsters, and workers.”
He also alleged that expensive crockery worth ₹10 lakh had arrived for Arvind Kejriwal at Panchayat Bhawan, questioning AAP’s claim of being a party of the common man.
The Congress party is holding protests across Punjab demanding the land pooling policy be rolled back.
