Kapurthala – In a heart-wrenching incident in the Kala Sanghian area, a 20-year-old woman, Preeti, and her three-year-old son died by suicide after reportedly enduring prolonged domestic harassment.
According to police, Preeti set herself and her child on fire on the rooftop of her in-laws’ house. The tragedy sparked public outrage, prompting swift action from the authorities.
Following a complaint by Preeti’s father, Amrik Singh — who alleged continued emotional abuse by her in-laws — police registered a case under IPC Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 498A (cruelty by in-laws).
Within hours, her father-in-law Vijay Kumar and mother-in-law Kulwinder Kaur were arrested. Two other accused — aunt-in-law Babbli and grandaunt-in-law Anita — are on the run.
“We’re treating this case with utmost seriousness. Arrests have been made, and we are actively searching for the remaining accused,” said SHO Prabhjot Kaur.
A forensic team examined the scene, and Preeti’s mobile phone has been seized for further investigation into call records and messages.
