On the sacred occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria extended his warm wishes and heartfelt greetings to the people of Punjab, as well as the entire Jain community. Observed with deep devotion and reverence by followers of Jainism across India and the world, Mahavir Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara, a spiritual teacher whose teachings continue to guide millions toward the path of righteousness, peace, and non-violence.
In his message, Governor Kataria highlighted the enduring relevance of Lord Mahavir’s message in today’s fast-paced and often turbulent world. He emphasized that the values taught by Lord Mahavir—especially Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (chastity), and Aparigraha (non-possession)—are not merely religious principles but universal truths that form the foundation of a peaceful and compassionate society. These timeless values, he noted, have the power to address the social and moral challenges facing our world and can play a crucial role in building a more harmonious and inclusive future for all.
The Governor stated that Mahavir Jayanti is not only a celebration for the Jain community but also an opportunity for people of all faiths to reflect upon the importance of self-discipline, tolerance, and respect for life. Lord Mahavir’s life, he explained, is a shining example of sacrifice, simplicity, and unwavering dedication to the betterment of humankind. By dedicating his entire existence to spiritual awakening and the promotion of non-violence, Lord Mahavir became a beacon of peace and humanity.
In his address, Governor Kataria urged citizens to imbibe the core teachings of Lord Mahavir in their daily lives. “The philosophy of Lord Mahavir transcends religious boundaries,” he said. “At a time when the world is confronted with growing intolerance, environmental degradation, and social divisions, his teachings offer a much-needed path toward unity and ecological harmony.”
He also paid tribute to the historical and spiritual significance of Jainism, a religion known for its strong advocacy of animal rights, environmental consciousness, and strict adherence to non-violence. In a world where violence and materialism continue to cause suffering and inequality, the Governor encouraged people to take inspiration from Jain values and cultivate a mindset of compassion, service, and gratitude.

Governor Kataria especially appreciated the contributions of the Jain community to the socio-economic and cultural fabric of Punjab and the nation. He acknowledged the role played by the community in promoting education, healthcare, charity, and ethical business practices. “The Jain community,” he said, “has always stood as a model of integrity, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy. Their efforts in preserving our cultural heritage and serving humanity are truly commendable.”
On the eve of Mahavir Jayanti, temples across Punjab were adorned with decorations, lights, and floral arrangements, with devotees taking part in religious processions, prayers, and acts of charity. Many Jain temples held spiritual discourses, highlighting Lord Mahavir’s life and the relevance of his teachings in the contemporary world. Devotees also engaged in community service, reflecting the spirit of Seva (selfless service) that is integral to Jain philosophy.
The Governor, while appreciating these traditions, called upon youth to take active interest in the lives of spiritual figures like Lord Mahavir, and to seek wisdom beyond material achievements. “We must ensure that our younger generations are introduced to the values of peace, empathy, and inner strength,” he remarked. “Let us teach them that true success lies not only in academic or professional achievements but in cultivating moral character and contributing to the greater good of society.”
Governor Kataria also stressed the importance of religious festivals as occasions to strengthen bonds between communities, encouraging people from diverse backgrounds to come together in the spirit of mutual respect and shared celebration. He said that Mahavir Jayanti, with its emphasis on love for all living beings, reminds us of the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. This sense of interconnectedness, he said, is vital for addressing global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and violence.
To mark the occasion, several educational institutions across Punjab organized special events and seminars focusing on the life and teachings of Lord Mahavir. These programs were attended by students, scholars, and religious leaders who discussed how the principles of non-violence and minimalism could offer solutions to the contemporary issues of consumerism, stress, and conflict. The Governor praised these initiatives and encouraged more schools and universities to integrate moral and spiritual education into their curricula.
As part of the celebrations, social welfare activities were also held, including blood donation drives, food distribution to the needy, and cleanliness campaigns. Such acts of service were a fitting tribute to Lord Mahavir’s ideals and a reminder that his message is most powerfully conveyed not just through rituals, but through actions that uplift and support others.
In concluding his message, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria once again extended his warm wishes to all on the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. He hoped that the festival would inspire individuals to turn inwards, embrace self-restraint, and spread love and peace in their surroundings. “Let us pledge,” he said, “to walk on the path shown by Lord Mahavir—not just on this day, but every day. Let us work together to build a society rooted in truth, tolerance, and non-violence.”
