Despite having police protection, the assailant managed to assassinate Sudhir Suri, the head of the Shiv Sena organization, with at least two bullets.

Amritsar: Sudhir Suri, a leader of the Hindutva right wing in Punjab, was shot dead this afternoon on a major street in an incident that was captured on video when there were over a dozen police officers around him.

In a demonstration against the management of a temple, Mr. Suri, the leader of a local group going by the name Shiv Sena Taksali, was shot at least five times with a handgun, purportedly by a nearby merchant

Despite having police protection due to threats from criminals and Khalistani radicals, Sandeep Singh, the assailant who has since been apprehended, was able to kill Mr. Suri at a hospital with at least two bullets. Local police were also stationed there.

A quick arrest was made and the accused’s firearm was taken. Arun Pal Singh, the city police commissioner, said that further inquiry was ongoing but withheld Shiv other information.

According to sources, the assailant, a resident of the Sultanwind neighborhood of the city, arrived there in an SUV with three other people, but they were able to flee.

Mr. Suri, who didn’t participate in the election, was most known for his venomous and reportedly racist social media video remarks directed against some Sikh organizations and Khalistan supporters in particular. Police have not yet linked.

The police commissioner urged the populace to maintain their composure and resist any cries from the crowd. Residents of the Sikh holy city were exchanging tense messages and conspiracies, according to local reports.

Earlier today, Mr. Suri got into a fight over suspected idol desecration with several guys from the administration of Gopal Mandir along Majitha Road, one of the busiest areas in the city. Just before the incident, he was broadcasting live on Facebook and displayed some older idols that had been “shamelessly discarded in the trash.” In that video, he said, “We would not allow such desecration, even if committed by fellow Hindus.”

He was shot while on a street dharna, sitting close to a friend who was spotted retaliating against the assailant with a handgun.
